Last week we wrapped up our eleventh SocialMedia.org Health Board Meeting at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale!
A huge thank you to Lee Aase and the team at Mayo Clinic for hosting us in their beautiful facility and helping put this meeting together.
47 social media leaders from 28 major hospitals got together to talk about the things that are most important to their work right now.

Over the two days, we had off-the-record leadership conversations you can’t experience anywhere else.
First, we kicked off day one with a large group discussion on healthcare’s social media approach to the millennial generation, followed by two rounds of small group discussions on topics chosen by attendees during the meeting.
Next, we heard five Show & Tell presentations from fellow SocialMedia.org Health members. They shared stories about projects they had led, challenges they had faced, what went well, what didn’t work, and what they hope to do next. We heard from:
- Stephanie Clemson and Amy Wyrick at BayCare Health System on their BayCare Canine Cam and how it fits into their content strategy.
- Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Kelly McDonald and Alexis Shaw on why social media audits are necessary and how to successfully complete one.
- Jessica Turner at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on their UGC strategy, which has generated millions of social media impressions in the past year.
- Emily Skopic and Meg Emmons with Allegheny Health Network on how to build a successful social media team, including the pros and cons of different organizational structures.
- Lee Aase with Mayo Clinic on their program to educate nurse managers about social media opportunities and risk mitigation.
Following a day of conversations and Show & Tell talks, SocialMedia.org Health members all went out for a fantastic dinner together.
We held our private Member Dinner at the scenic CopperWynd Resort. There was plenty of delicious food and even more laughs. It was the perfect opportunity for members to connect with each other before a big day of brainstorming, discussion, and collaboration.
We also held four Member-Led Discussions where SocialMedia.org Health members explored tough questions, shared experiences, and got help with specific challenges they’re facing.

- UT Southwestern’s Kristen Holland Shear on implementing paid efforts into your program.
- Caitlin Angeloff at Providence St. Joseph Health on utilizing social media for social good.
- Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center’s Libby Coulton and Kate Setter on evaluating your channel strategy.
- Jennifer Woods and Becky Armendariz at Banner Health on effectively launching a social media pilot for physicians.
After the Member-Led Discussions, we moved into an afternoon of fast-paced, intense conversations during the unconference rounds.
Members chose what was most important for them to talk about with their SocialMedia.org Health tribe in a confidential setting. We covered a lot of ground — topics included:
- Utilizing physicians on social media
- Using Instagram effectively and hitting the 10K milestone
- Building employee ambassador programs
- Instagram Stories, takeovers, and swipe-up content
- Managing social media crises
- Utilizing Facebook Live
- How to make the case for more resources for your teams
- YouTube strategy
- Whether the amount of time we spend on blogs is worth it
- Data analysis: tools, best practices, and reports
- Soliciting online reviews
- Strategies and finding success for organic engagement
